Lesson Plans and lab work is now available on my teacher pay teacher site, https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/3D-Printable-DNA-RNA-Manipulative-Lab-1-3452084

This is a dual extrusion remix of my popular DNA/RNA manipulative set.
When I tested this in class, there was some problems seeing the letters in the tiles if the class lighting was off. If you have students with visual impairments, you can print these in bold contrasting colors. Future versions can have braille on the pieces.

This is a remix of http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:1259352

This is designed to model DNA, RNA, DNA / RNA coding, as well as all other process of DNA / RNA transcription.

I am also working on a CRISPER / Cas9 restriction enzyme expansion set so you can explore how this new gene editing technology works.

Printing instructions: The base tiles are marked as ptA, while the letter inlays are ptB. I used the dual extrusion settings of Cura to print them together.

You can use this with the restriction enzyme set or amino acid set to learn how to transcribe DNA to RNA to protein.

I am also working on a CRISPER expansion set.

Print instructions

Unassociated tags: #MakerEdChallenge2

Category: Biology Print Settings

Printer Brand: LulzBot

Printer: TAZ 5

Rafts: Doesn't Matter

Supports: Doesn't Matter

Resolution: .3 - .1

Infill: 5%

Notes:

Printed on a dual extruder, Print with a ooze shield and tower.

Post-Printing

Post-printing

Remove the ooze shield and sand off any rough edges. These should lie flat to stack easily.

How I Designed This

How I Designed this

This is a remix of my original DNA / RNA manipulative set that I made in TinkerCAD. I will post a video about how to set up the files for dual extrusion.

Custom Section

Project Dual DNA / RNA

Use the instructions from http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:1259352 to write your lesson plan. This dual colored set of tiles provide a vibrant splash of color for this set. You can use this to test and explore dual 3D printing in class.

If you have students with visual impairments, or the lighting in your room is sub-standard,these high viability tiles can help you in class.

Overview & Background

For this project you can do the following.

Explore how to 3D model a dual extrusion print.

Use this file as a set for dual extrusion 3D printing.

Use this set to explore DNA / RNA.
All other overviews can be seen in the remix http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:1259352

Beforehand you should review the basic of inheritance, Mendelian genetics, and heredity.

Audience

This is intended for Middle School to College level biology classes. This works great for home school students.

Subjects

Middle School, High School, AP, and college level biology.

Possibly include coding in computer programing.

Standards

See http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:1259352 for standards.

Lesson / Activity

See http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:1259352 for activity and lessons.

Duration

This can take 2 weeks to a month or more depending on the depth of your lesson plan.

Preperation

See http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:1259352 for teacher prep.

You will need a dual extrusion 3Dprinter to print this set of tiles. I used a Luzbot Taz 5 with a dual extruder.

References

The tiles came from a paper design in a popular Middle School science textbook. You can use your text to model how DNA and RNA is replicated.

Assesment

See http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:1259352 for assessment.

Handouts

Lesson Plans and Handouts will be posted for sale on my teacher Pay Teacher webpage.
