DSLR 35MM Film Negative Scanner Rig
pinshape
A DIY rig for scanning 35mm film negatives using a DSLR camera such as my Canon 70D streamlines the process and keeps the camera perpendicular and in position even when switching frames. The camera glides along the arca swiss quick release plate, which attaches to the camera_plate, allowing me to print various 50mm and 70mm distances for precise lens alignment. For reference, I used a 50mm distance with a 21mm extension tube mounted on my 50mm prime lens. The back frame holder features a slightly larger opening to ensure the entire negative frame gets exposed. To prevent scratches, I've added soft fabric stickers to both the front and back holders. Simply take a photo of the film negative while it's lit up, then post-process the image to restore colors, which requires either a macro lens or a suitable regular lens with extension tubes. If your camera has different dimensions, you may need to create a custom frame holder.
