The Soviet heavy machine gun DŠKM is one of the most famous weapons in its category. As a weapon that bore the names of designers Degtyarev and Shpagin, DŠK was manufactured from 1938 with a shielded carriage and wheels, allowing for conversion to an anti-aircraft mount. The robust, almost forging-like heavy gun proved itself reliable and effective in battles on the Eastern Front by destroying living targets up to 3500 meters, air targets up to 2500 meters, and penetrating armor plates of up to 15 mm at a distance of 500 meters with its explosive ammunition. In addition to its infantry version, it was also used in tanks, aircraft, ships, and armored trains. At the end of 1944 and beginning of 1945, the machine gun underwent modernization, which involved upgrading the feeding system by replacing the horizontal feed tray with a rotating drum. The shape of the muzzle brake also changed. The gun's mechanism operates on the principle of extracting powder gases from the barrel and has a breech locked by locking blocks. This modified version was designated as DŠKM 1938/46 (M for modernized). In this configuration, the machine gun entered the service of more than 40 countries. In the post-war period, the Czechoslovakian company Zbrojovka Vsetín produced a licensed variant, which culminated in the construction of the anti-aircraft quadruple machine gun vz.53 introduced to the Czechoslovak Armed Forces. Today, the machine gun is still used as an anti-aircraft armament of the DANA 77 SHKH system.
