Drusus the Elder was a stepson of Emperor Augustus and brother of future Emperor Tiberius. His face and distinctive hairstyle in this bronze portrait imitate Augustus's appearance - a deliberate effort to establish family resemblance, even though they were not blood relatives. Augustus came from the Julian family, while Drusus hailed from the Claudian family. Visual similarities between portraits became a means of legitimizing and transferring power.
