Drunken old woman clutching a lagynos at The Glyptotek Museum, Copenhagen
myminifactory
The sculpture, painstakingly reassembled from numerous fragments and extensively supplemented, vividly portrays an elderly woman firmly grasping a lagynos (a Hellenistic wine jug of great historical significance). The work falls squarely within the category of Hellenistic depictions of individuals beset by vices, who are shown in the midst of their degraded daily lives. The rendering of the veins and wrinkles is remarkably lifelike, and combined with an exceptionally detailed drapery, suggests that it was created during this time period. The statue was discovered in 1620 as a result of restoration work being conducted on the church of Saint'Agnes located in via Nomentana. Old Woman with vase, 3rd or 2nd century BC Roman replica. Original from Munich, Glyptothek. The Royal Cast Collection (Copenhagen, Denmark). Made with Memento Beta. This object is part of "Scan The World".
