The water features in Baltimore's park have been a vital source of drinking water for its citizens since its inception. To meet the federal mandate for a more secure water supply, the DPW contracted a team to design and implement two underground storage tanks that would replace the open reservoir. The proposed tanks would have a significant impact on both the visual appearance and functionality of the park. The DPW is installing two massive drinking water tanks, one holding 35 million gallons and the other 19 million gallons, beneath the western third of Druid Lake. Once construction is complete, the land above the tanks will be transformed into a new public space that includes a band shell. The remaining eastern part of the reservoir will be converted into a publicly accessible lake, effectively removing Druid Lake from the city's drinking water supply.
