Dover Western Heights is a high and extensive ridge of chalk downland which runs along the north-eastern edge of Dover, Kent, England. It forms the town's highest ground, with an elevation of 130 metres above sea level. The hill is particularly steep on its southern side, where it drops sharply to the town below. This precipitous slope has been quarried for chalk since Roman times and is still used today as a source of building materials. A road, known as the Western Heights Road, runs along the top of the ridge from east to west. This road provides access to a number of military defensive structures that were built in the 19th century during the Napoleonic Wars. These fortifications include Martello towers and other artillery emplacements designed to protect Dover Harbour. The Western Heights also contains a small public park which offers panoramic views of the surrounding area, including the English Channel. Visitors can walk along the ridge and take in the sights from various vantage points. During World War II, the area was used as a military base by both British and American forces. The site is still home to several military installations today. In addition to its historical significance and scenic views, Dover Western Heights also serves as a wildlife sanctuary for local flora and fauna.
