I managed to hold 7/16 inch pipe securely in some planters around my yard. I used a laser cutter to carve a piece from 1/4 inch thick wood and it should work fine for 9/32 or 5/16 inch pipe too. The hole size is 5/8 inch to fit the pipe snugly. I also gave the tip a sanding, which created a pointy edge - but that's entirely up to you.
