Drill Press Knob
thingiverse
I needed to repair a faulty Crank Handle on my Craftsman Drill Press, so the table would smoothly go up or down again. This was actually my first original design from scratch, and at first, I thought about creating a complete crank handle system, but since this was just a test project, I figured starting with something basic made sense. For now, let's talk about what happened next. The Crank Handle The design went on print using my Printrbot Simple Metal in PLA, as I'd printed many projects before. As it was initially intended to be a simple prototype for verifying the dimensions were right, the infill had been set to just 20%. With any luck, I wouldn't have to re-print anytime soon. Yet, considering how long the piece has held up thus far, and since solid pieces can indeed last a bit longer, perhaps my guesswork about this not being solid enough wasn't totally misguided either? Nonetheless, given the low volume infill ratio on this piece, one thing is sure: once I'm satisfied with its stability during actual use - it still seems perfectly capable so far – then we can see how effective more significant pieces would prove in comparison. I also hope that eventually breaking something might allow us enough information about potential modifications for better design success later down the line; who knows?
