Drill Bit Sharpening Jig
thingiverse
A precision tool for fine-tuning small drill bits. Designed specifically for drill bits with diameters ranging from 1 to 3 millimeters, this jig forms a precise point angle of 118° and incorporates a relief angle for optimal performance. With this jig, users can accurately sharpen both lips of the bit in a symmetrical manner, eliminating the need for expensive equipment like Dremels or bench grinders. Sharpening is achieved by gliding a 180-grit sandpaper over a flat surface. Design Overview: The existing drill bit sharpening jigs on Thingiverse often only restrict the point angle, leaving the relief angle dependent on user positioning of the cutting lip. This can result in non-functional or incorrectly angled drill bits. In response to this limitation, I created a jig that constrains both the point and relief angles, ensuring accurate sharpening of small drill bits. Operating Instructions: 1. Insert the drill bit into the corresponding hole. 2. Verify that the cutting lips are parallel to the guide lines on the jig. 3. Position the cutting lip approximately 0.1 millimeters above the jig's surface. 4. Gently tighten the screws. 5. Grind one face of the bit against sandpaper until you sense resistance diminishing. 6. Repeat the process for the opposing face. Additional Notes: Initially, I aimed to create an adjustable version of this jig capable of accommodating various drill bit sizes. However, I decided to focus on developing a superior 4-facet sharpening jig, which offers improved performance at a comparable price point. https://thingiverse.com/thing:4005898
