Drill bit sharpener

Drill bit sharpener

This is my version of a drill bit sharpener for use with a Dremel tool. The mounting is designed for Dremel model 395. I don't know if it will work on other models. I have seen and tried other designs and preferred to grind from the outside of the Dremel due to its rotational direction. By mounting to a small scrap of wood (11" x 5"), it leaves your hands free to safely grind the bit. I have ground bits from 1/16" to 3/8". Setup the grinding by adjusting the bit fixture depth such that top end of the bit is just covered by the outside edge of the grinding stone. Start grinding with the bit cutting edge aligned vertically and then turning the bit shank end clockwise (about 15°) to cover the flute face and then do the same to the opposite flute keeping an equal amount of grinding on both flutes. Repeat this process until a sharp edge is achieved. I have added a simple clamp so the Dremel tool could be used in a fixed horozontal position for hands free operation without the drill fixture.
