Drawer unit for threading taps of all types
prusaprinters
I've seen various tap storage boxes, but they usually only have space for a taper tap, a second (aka plug) tap and a bottoming (aka plug) tap. I wanted something to organise all of my taps, including serial taps, spiral flute taps, spiral point taps, fluteless taps and long series taps.It only holds metric coarse taps; the metric fine ones come out rarely enough that I don't mind rummaging in one big drawer. Antediluvian nonsense like BSF or UNC come out even more rarely so the same applies.I designed it to be completely printable, but I had some bed adhesion issues when printing the frame so decided to just make it out of plywood, which was a lot quicker, although it's a bit shabby. After posting it on reddit, I was asked if the models were available so I'm sharing it here. I doubt anyone else has the same selection of taps as I have, so I've included versions without the debossed text saying “FLUTELESS”, “SERIAL #2” etc. These are prefixed “NoText”. There are editable STEP files in case you want to add your own text. To be honest, the text on the smaller drawers is a bit shabby looking, but it is readable. The die stock and tap wrench drawers are identical, so there's only one file provided for both drawers. I've also provided a STEP file for the wooden unit I made.I'd recommend printing the drawers with a 0.4 mm nozzle on standard settings (I used PETG). The handles are dovetailed into the drawers; these can be printed on the same settings. For best clarity of text, the labels should be printed with a 0.25 mm nozzle with a colour change for the last couple of layers. If you to decide to print a drawer unit based on this design, please do share a make as I'd be really interested to see what you come up with.If you decide to print the drawer unit instead of making a wooden one, use the biggest nozzle you can find and I'd recommend an enclosure for your printer to avoid any issues with it lifting off the bed.
