Two chess pieces remixed from Raphael Schaaf's Pokémon Chess Set and Perry Thibaudeau's 4d-Staunton Full Size Chess Set. Designed and printed by Matthew Rowchodhury '21 at Williams College for the 2021-2022 Repro Japan exhibition at the Williams College Museum of Art. In a Staunton chess set the relative rank of a piece is indicated by its height and the diameter of its base. We tried to reproduce that in these unconventional pieces, by using traditional Staunton bases and adjusting the height of the figures. Squirrel's smooth head also mimics the round top that signifies a traditional pawn. Please see the "Repro Japan" collection under my profile for details about the exhibition and the context in which these objects were displayed.
