Clodius Albinus, a formidable Roman usurper, rose to prominence after Pertinax's brutal murder in 193, earning him the title of emperor from Britain and Hispania's loyal legions. He reclaimed the throne in 196, only to meet his downfall in the following year. The enigmatic marble sculpture at The Louvre (ORIG2465) initially misidentified as a portrait of Albinus, Emperor between 193-197, now remains shrouded in mystery, its true subject unknown.
