Title: The Dragon Slayer Artist: Anonymous Date: Circa 1130 Medium: Limestone Carving Dimensions: Unknown Accession #: PE 1981,0703.1 Credit: Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk, England Category: Medieval Europe - 1050-1500 In medieval Europe, the monarch and the Church were the two dominant institutions constantly vying for control. Society was structured around a feudal system where peasants worked the land under their lord's authority. Nevertheless, the rapid expansion of towns and the rise of a powerful merchant class brought about prosperity and transformed traditional social hierarchies. This carving depicts a man and a mythical creature locked in fierce combat. The figure, clad in a short tunic, stands firmly on top of the dragon's tail, grasps its neck, and drives a spear deep into its chest. This scene is likely an allegory representing humanity's ongoing struggle against evil. The carving was discovered within the Bury St Edmunds monastery in Suffolk, where it may have originally adorned a doorway.
