After the downfall of House Targaryen, King Robert I Baratheon replaced the dragon skulls with banners and tapestries in a bold move. The skulls were carefully stored in a damp cellar deep within the Red Keep where they remain to this day. Nineteen skulls of varying sizes are on display, some having been identified while others remain shrouded in mystery. It is possible that some of these dragon skulls may have originated from Westeros itself, as George R. R. Martin suggests that dragons once roamed the land freely.
