(PLA) is a polyester derived from renewable biomass, typically from fermented plant starch, such as corn, cassava, sugarcane or sugar beet pulp. PLA is 100% biosourced and biodegradable, one of the first renewable polymers to compete with traditional polymers in terms of performance and environmental impact! Is PLA toxic? In solid form, no. In fact, Polylactic Acid (PLA) is biodegradable. It is often used in food handling and medical implants that biodegrade within the body over time. Even if you accidently eat pla, scientists found that “PLA is Generally Recognized as Safe (GRAS) when used in contact with food.” The study did reveal that PLA does release a small amount of lactic acid, however lactic acid is a common food ingredient and there was not enough to cause harm to humans. This is a non-toxic chemical, however, and is relatively safe to be around. PLA is a low emitter of VOCs and UFPs as compared to other 3D printing filaments.
