Drag racing -- the high-speed thrill of watching gas-powered machines take off in a dead sprint over the distance of a quarter-mile track. It's an electrifying sight to see contestants, either human or vehicle-driven, hurtling down the strip as the roar of their engines grow louder and faster until one of them reaches a predetermined point at 402 meters or exactly a fourth of a mile, bringing to a swift end the frantic competition for speed. There are variations to this standard race. Some may cover more ground with each run. These may go as long as 804 meters or approximately half that length plus some. Another sprint event spans 201 meters or eight one-eighths. Still another event tracks contestants down an additional full lap - a distance of over three-quarters of four kilometers to the nearest hundred. Despite differences in course lengths, all participants compete solely based on who accelerates quickest, racing each other straight ahead and never ever turning right around in front of an opposing lane. In other words, drivers show their worth as drivers when competing on an oval where drivers turn left at any curve that happens before crossing that predetermined endpoint - so this does not happen to count as a traditional roundhouse victory lap where driver would complete multiple trips. Historically popular drag racing takes place annually over numerous locations and seasons throughout United States with many other places all around the world, too; competitions involve cars like sports sedans (that often look pretty fancy inside), muscle machines designed mainly just for high acceleration off straight lines, classic autos - which date back quite far indeed to beginnings - motorcycles running along narrow bike roads, electric-powered vehicles that generate even stronger speeds and a number of boat events featuring large V6 and I6 powertrains built specifically to reach great speeds.
