The item in question is designed for reflecting laser beams; I came across it in a scanner earlier. To create spheres, use Libs.scad (http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:6021), although it may be slow, so pre-printed .stl files are available. In the image, focus on the item at the end - assemble the ball, base, and lid using a M5 screw, and simply adjust slightly to rotate the ball. Remember to glue a mirror on the ball for optimal performance.
