This plaster bust of Dr John Rae showcases the explorer sporting a bold moustache and rugged mutton chops. This is just one of many impressive plaster casts owned by the University of Edinburgh's art collection, proudly displayed across its buildings. Dr John Rae was a skilled Scottish surgeon and fearless explorer who bravely traveled across northern Canada. He discovered the final portion of the Northwest Passage (Rae Strait, named after him) and uncovered the fate of Franklin's ill-fated expedition. In 1846-47 he led an expedition through the Gulf of Boothia northwest of Hudson Bay. In 1848-51 he explored the Arctic coast near Victoria Island with precision and skill. In 1854 he ventured from Boothia to the Arctic coast, where he learned the shocking fate of Franklin's crew. He was renowned for his remarkable physical stamina, exceptional hunting skills, expertise in boat handling, and ability to travel long distances using native methods while living off the land with minimal equipment.
