Dr Alexander Thomson
sketchfab
Dr Alexander Thomson, a visionary leader, took the reins as Geelong's first mayor when the council was formally established in 1850. A devoted local citizen, he had made Geelong his home since 1841 and later became a respected figure in Victorian politics, serving on the Legislative Council from 1852-54 and the Legislative Assembly from 1857-59. With a keen sense of exploration, Thomson ventured into the surrounding area, while also contributing to the growth of the local Presbyterian Church. Furthermore, he was appointed as a director for the Geelong-Melbourne Railway Company, reflecting his diverse interests. Tragically, Dr Thomson passed away in 1866 and is now laid to rest at the Geelong Eastern Cemetery. This striking sculpture serves as a testament to one of Geelong's pioneering figures. Crafted by renowned artist C (Charles) Summers of Melbourne in 1857, it stands as a lasting tribute to Thomson's enduring legacy.
