The Pulemët Degtjarëva Pechotnyj Red Army Chambered in 7.62 × 54mm R, the Degtjarëv was cheap and easy to maintain - early models had fewer than 80 parts - and was particularly durable. The Achilles heel of this weapon was its bipod which broke easily. In addition, the magazine is a disco, which had a modest capacity of 49 top-fed rounds, was relatively small and ran out easily. Because of its magazine rather than tape feed, the weapon has often been classified in the submachine gun category. It was nicknamed turntable by the Red Army due to the shape of the magazine that resembled a vinyl record and because it rotated when the weapon fired. The DP machine gun was joined in the 1950s by the more modern RPD, and entirely replaced by the PK submachine gun in the 1960s, but continued to appear in many low-intensity conflicts throughout the 20th century.
