The DP-27 was a lightweight machine gun designed specifically for the Soviet Red Army in the 1920s under Vasily Degtyarev's leadership. The first test model, the DP-26, underwent rigorous testing with two guns firing 5,000 rounds each from September 27 to 29, 1926. This initial trial revealed weaknesses in the extractor and firing pin mechanisms. Following design improvements, two more guns were manufactured and tested in December 1926 under adverse conditions, resulting in a remarkable .6% stoppages rate. However, further modifications were required for the bolt carrier and chamber locking mechanism. After redesigning these components, the improved DP-27 was put to the test by the Red Army at Kovrov's plant on January 17-21, 1927, successfully passing all evaluations and receiving approval for mass production. A year-long service trial ensued, after which a key improvement request emerged: incorporating the large flash suppressor now iconic in the design's visual identity. Following additional refinements, the DP was poised to become the Red Army's primary light machine gun during World War II.
