In the mid 1950s Butler pioneered a distinctive style marked by overtly erotic and sadistic themes, as seen in Down Looking Girl, one of its earliest examples. The girl stands precariously on two narrow bars, her genitalia exposed while her face remains hidden, forcing her into a sexual object status. By today's standards such images might be deemed misogynistic, but in 1950s Britain they reflected commonly held male views towards women that were frequently expressed through the art of the era.
