DOVELAS CON EL CASTIGO DE LOS LUJURIOSOS

Maestro Mateo circa 1200 Granite with remains of polychromy Both pieces likely formed part of the original western facade of the cathedral, probably located on its southern side, in relation to the theme developed immediately thereafter in the Pórtico de la Gloria. They would be removed from their original location after 1738, when construction began on the current Baroque facade of the Obradoiro. Their reliefs depict with an exemplary purpose for the medieval spectator the punishment of the sin of lust. In one, a man is shown naked, surrounded by a snake biting his groin, while another reptile swallows his penis. The other shows a woman to whom two snakes bite her breasts at the same time as other animals punish her face and legs.
