Introduced in 1975, the DC-9-50 series was a lengthened version of the DC-9-40 with increased capacity and powered by Pratt and Whitney engines. The military C-9-50 variant served US forces, followed by numerous MD-80 series developed by McDonnell Douglas and ultimately the Boeing 717 under Boeing's ownership.
