The Series 50 (DC-9-50) was an extended version of the DC-9-40 with an additional 8'2" to the center fuselage, accommodating up to 125 passengers. Powered by 2 Pratt and Whitney JT8D-15 or JT8D-17 engines delivering 16,000 or 16,500 pounds of thrust each, these variants began delivery in 1975 to Eastern Airlines. This was the largest variant in the Douglas DC-9 aircraft family. The C-9-50 served as a military version for the US armed forces. Following Douglas' acquisition by McDonnell, various versions were developed as the MD-80, 81, 82, 83, 84, 85, 86, 87, 88, 89, and 90. Eventually, Boeing purchased McDonnell Douglas and produced the final variant as the Boeing 717.
