The series 50 (DC-9-50) was an extended version of the DC-9-40 with an extra 8'2" added to the center fuselage, accommodating up to 125 passengers. Powered by Pratt and Whitney JT8D-15 or JT8D-17 engines, these models were initially delivered in 1975 to Eastern Airlines, marking the largest variant of the Douglas DC-9 aircraft family. The C-9-50 was a military version of the DC-9-50 built for US armed forces. McDonnell Douglas Aircraft later developed several follow-on variants as the MD-80, 81, 82, 83, 84, 85, 86, 87, 88, 89, and 90. The final variant was created by Boeing as the Boeing 717 after acquiring McDonnell Douglas.
