The series 50 (DC-9-50) was an extended version of the DC-9-40, boasting an extra 8'2" fuselage length and accommodating up to 125 passengers. Powered by 2 Pratt and Whitney JT8D-15 or JT8D-17 engines (16000 or 16500 pounds thrust each), deliveries began in 1975, first going to Eastern Airlines. This was the largest DC-9 variant. A military version, the C-9-50, was built for US armed forces. McDonnell Douglas Aircraft developed several follow-on variants, including the MD-80, 81, 82, 83, 84, 85, 86, 87, 88, 89, and 90. Finally, Boeing, after purchasing McDonnell Douglas, developed the Boeing 717 variant.
