Powered by Pratt and Whitney JT8D-15 or JT8D-17 engines, delivering 16,000 or 16,500 pounds of thrust each, deliveries began in 1975 with Eastern Airlines. The largest variant within the Douglas DC-9 aircraft family, it later evolved into military C-9-50 versions for US armed forces. Post acquisition by McDonnell Douglas Aircraft Company, several variants were developed as the MD-80, 81, 82, 83, 84, 85, 86, 87, 88, 89, 90 series. The final iteration was the Boeing 717 under the Boeing Aircraft Company's ownership.
