The series 50 (DC-9-50), an extended version of the DC-9-40 with an additional 8'2" center fuselage length, carried up to 125 passengers. Powered by Pratt and Whitney JT8D-15 or JT8D-17 engines, delivering 16,000 or 16,500 pounds of thrust each, deliveries began in 1975 with Eastern Airlines. The largest variant within the Douglas DC-9 aircraft family, it later evolved into military C-9-50 versions for US armed forces.
