Powered by 2 Pratt and Whitney JT8D-15 or JT8D-17 engines delivering 16,000 or 16,500 pounds of thrust each, deliveries began in 1975 with Eastern Airlines. As the largest variant within the Douglas DC-9 aircraft family, the DC-9-50 was succeeded by a series of McDonnell Douglas MD variants and ultimately evolved into the Boeing 717 under Boeing ownership.
