The DC-9-50 series, an extended version of the DC-9-40 by 8'2", carried up to 125 passengers and was powered by Pratt and Whitney JT8D-15 or JT8D-17 engines, delivering 16,000 or 16,500 pounds of thrust each. Deliveries began in 1975, with Eastern Airlines receiving the first aircraft. The DC-9-50 was also a military version for US armed forces. McDonnell Douglas Aircraft, post acquiring Douglas Aircraft Company, developed several variants as the MD-80, 81, 82, 83, 84, 85, 86, 87, 88, 89, 90. The MD series culminated in the Boeing 717 after Boeing's acquisition of McDonnell Douglas.
