Powered by Pratt and Whitney JT8D-15 or JT8D-17 engines, these aircraft were delivered from 1975 onwards, with Eastern Airlines receiving the first one. The DC-9-50 had a military variant called C-9-50, built for US armed forces. McDonnell Douglas Aircraft developed several follow-on variants under the MD series, eventually leading to the Boeing 717 when Boeing acquired McDonnell Douglas.
