Powered by 2 Pratt and Whitney JT8D-15 or JT8D-17 engines, providing 16000 or 16500 pounds thrust each. Deliveries began in 1975 with Eastern Airlines receiving the first one. This was the largest variant of the Douglas DC-9 aircraft family. McDonnell Douglas Aircraft developed military and several other variants as the MD-80, 81,82,83,84,85,86,87,88,89,90 after purchasing Douglas Aircraft Company. Finally, Boeing created the Boeing 717 with the purchase of McDonnell Douglas.
