Powered by 2 Pratt and Whitney JT8D-15 or JT8D-17 engines generating 16000 or 16500 pounds thrust each, deliveries began in 1975 with the first one going to Eastern Airlines. It was the largest variant of the Douglas DC-9 aircraft family. The C-9-50 was a military version built for US armed forces. McDonnell Douglas Aircraft developed several follow-on variants as the MD-80, 81,82,83,84,85,86,87,88,89,90. Finally, Boeing purchased McDonnell Douglas and developed the last variant as the Boeing 717 under the Boeing Aircraft Company.
