Introducing the DC-9-20 model in various liveries, this aircraft series 50 (DC-9-50) was an extended version of DC-9-40 with added center fuselage length, accommodating up to 125 passengers. Powered by Pratt and Whitney JT8D-15 or JT8D-17 engines providing 16000 or 16500 pounds thrust each, deliveries began in 1975. The military version of DC-9-50 was the C-9-50 built for US armed forces. McDonnell Douglas Aircraft developed several follow-on variants as the MD-80, 81, 82, 83, 84, 85, 86, 87, 88, 89, and 90. Finally, Boeing purchased McDonnell Douglas and developed the last variant as the Boeing 717.
