Built near to scale, it's available in multiple formats. As a rival to the 707 series, the Douglas DC-8 was developed concurrently and shared similar design elements and capabilities. Its first flight took place in 1957, and these aircraft boasted an impressive safety record during their service on major airline routes throughout the 1970s. Many were later converted for cargo use, continuing to fly as freighters even five decades after their initial development.
