Built near to scale, it's available in several formats. The Douglas DC-8, a rival of the 707 series, was developed simultaneously with similar design and capabilities. As one of the first practical jet airliners for intercontinental range and larger capacity, the DC-8 was historically significant and popular among airlines. Its first flight took place in 1957. These aircraft boasted a good safety record and served major airline routes until the late 1970s.
