The Douglas DC-8 was a competitor of the 707 series, sharing similar design and capabilities as it was developed simultaneously. As one of the first jet airliners capable of intercontinental range with increased capacity, the DC-8 made history and gained popularity among airlines. Its maiden flight took place in 1957, boasting an impressive safety record and continuing to serve main airline routes until late in the 1970s.
