The textured model includes animateable turbines, flaps, ailerons, rudder, elevators, and landing gear that can be hidden for "gear up" flight; built near to scale, it's available in various formats. As a rival to the 707 series, the DC-8, developed contemporaneously, shared similar design features and capabilities. Known for its intercontinental range and increased capacity, the historic first DC-8 flight occurred in 1957. Despite retiring from main airline routes by late '70s, these aircraft maintained a good safety record throughout their service.
