Douglas Aircraft designed and produced the DC-8-63, the largest in a family of four-engine narrow-body jet airliners, between 1958 and 1972. The DC-8 soon fell behind the Boeing 707, but still remained a top choice among airlines until Douglas merged with McDonnell Aircraft. Four main models emerged: the DC-8-21, DC-8-51, DC-8-61, and DC-8-63. Each model offered seating for up to 269 passengers in single-class or 251 passengers in two-class configurations. The DC-8-63 shared its fuselage with the DC-8-61, while sharing a wingspan with the DC-8-21 and DC-8-51. Just over five remain in operation worldwide today after nearly six decades of use.
