The Douglas DC-8, a rival of Boeing's 707 series, was developed simultaneously with similar design features and capabilities. As one of the first jet airliners capable of intercontinental range and larger capacity, this model was historically significant and popular among airlines. The first DC-8 took flight in 1957, boasting a good safety record that made it a mainstay on major airline routes until late in the 1970s.
