The Douglas DC-8, a competitor of the 707 series, was developed simultaneously and shared similar design features and capabilities. As one of the first jet airliners capable of long-range intercontinental flights and larger capacity, it made history and gained popularity among airlines. The first DC-8 flight took place in 1957, and these aircraft boasted an impressive safety record that saw them used on major air routes until late in the 1970s.
