The Douglas DC-8, a rival to the 707 series, was developed simultaneously with similar design features and capabilities. As one of the first jet airliners capable of long-range intercontinental flights and larger capacity, this historic aircraft gained popularity among airlines. The first DC-8 took flight in 1957, boasting a good safety record that saw its use on main airline routes until the late 1970s.
