Constructed near to scale, the Douglas DC-8 model is available in various formats and was a competitor to Boeing's 707 series. Both aircraft were developed around the same time, sharing similar design and capabilities as the first practical jet airliners capable of intercontinental range and larger capacity. Launched in 1957, DC-8 planes had an impressive safety record and were employed on major airline routes until late in the 1970s.
