The Douglas DC-6 is a piston-driven airliner and cargo aircraft manufactured by Douglas Aircraft Company from 1946 to 1958. Initially conceived as a military transport during World War II's final stages, it was later adapted for the long-range commercial market postwar. Over 700 were constructed, with many still operational today in cargo roles, militarily, and wildfire control services. In U.S. Air Force service, DC-6 was designated as C-118 Liftmaster, while in United States Navy service prior to 1962, it was identified as R6D; after that year, all navy variants were reclassified as C-118.
