The Douglas DC-6 is a piston-powered airliner and transport aircraft manufactured by the Douglas Aircraft Company from 1946 to 1958. Initially designed as a military transport towards the end of World War II, it was later reworked for long-range commercial transport use. Over 700 DC-6s were constructed with many still operational today in cargo, military, and wildfire control operations. In the U.S. Air Force, the DC-6 was referred to as the C-118 Liftmaster while in the U.S. Navy, it was known as R6D until 1962 when all naval variants were also designated as C-118.
