Initially designed for military use in World War II, it transitioned to commercial long-range transport post-war. Over 700 were constructed; many still operate today in cargo, military, and wildfire control roles. In U.S. Air Force service, it was known as the C-118 Liftmaster, while in United States Navy service before 1962, it was designated R6D, changing to C-118 thereafter for all Navy variants.
