The DC-6, produced by the Douglas Aircraft Company from 1946 to 1958, was initially conceived as a military transport during World War II but later adapted for long-range commercial use post-war. Over 700 units were manufactured, with many still in operation today serving in cargo, military, and wildfire control capacities. In the United States Air Force, it was designated C-118 Liftmaster, while in the U.S. Navy, it was previously known as R6D until 1962 when all variants were redesignated as C-118.
