Originally intended as a military transport during World War II, it was later redesigned for long-range commercial use. Over 700 were manufactured, with many still in operation today in roles ranging from cargo to wildfire control. In the United States Air Force, the DC-6 was known as the C-118 Liftmaster, while in the U.S. Navy, it went by R6D before 1962, at which point all naval variants were designated as C-118.
